Things I'd Tell My Younger Self

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!

So today I turn 24, bear with me a second whilst I allow that to settle in.. I am 24 years old. It doesn't feel like all those years have passed and I definitely wish I was turning 18 all over again. Whilst we can sit and mourn the loss of my childhood, I kept seeing these posts and I felt inspired to write my own for my 24th birthday so here's things I would tell my younger self...

1. IF SOMEBODY TREATS YOU LIKE SHIT, JUST REMEMBER THAT THERE IS SOMETHING WRONG WITH THEM, NOT YOU. NORMAL PEOPLE DON'T GO AROUND DESTROYING YOU
you'll get bullied through a lot of your school life, you'll struggle to create solid, lasting friendships or BBFs and you'll still meet people in your 20s that treat you like shit but you'll learn one day that this isn't a reflection on you. you learn that not everybody is going to like you, that's okay.

2. BE WHO YOU ARE, SAY WHAT YOU FEEL
this leads onto this point, that being yourself is the best decision you'll ever make at the end of high school. you'll wear what you like, you'll say what you like and you'll be whoever you'd like to be. if people do not like you then you'll learn to just get on with your day and it's not the end of the world.

3. THE MOST EXCITING, CHALLENGING AND SIGNIFICANT RELATIONSHIP OF ALL IS THE ONE YOU HAVE WITH YOURSELF
just because your not in a relationship when everybody else in your year at school is and your priority isn't how many boys you've kissed, knowing and enjoying your own company and what YOU love doing is better anyway.

4. DREAMS DON'T WORK UNLESS YOU DO
you'll learn this probably later rather than sooner, don't kick yourself over it. the arts is a difficult career, you'll fill out every application under the sun and give it your all. you'll have some real highlights to your professional development, make the most of them and be proud of yourself. don't allow the criticism to stop you from pursuing what you'd like to do with your life, it's yours to live.

5. BREATHE IN COURAGE, EXHALE FEAR
you know that funny feeling of panic you carry around with you for years, makes public transport a nightmare and creeps on you during sleepovers at your friends so you have to go home. soon you'll find out you suffer from anxiety, this doesn't mean your weak and you'll learn to control it so much so that it doesn't run your life. there will be a tough few months of not understanding what it is but it's fine and there's plenty of support out there for you :)

6. LIFE IS A JOURNEY, ENJOY THE RIDE
university is the best 3 years of your life and you'll be thrown into the real world quicker than you believe. enjoy every moment that your allowed to relax and not have the responsibilities of bills to pay! school should be the best moments of your life, stop skiving!

7. LOVE YOUR PARENTS, WE ARE SO BUSY GROWING UP, WE OFTEN FORGET THAT THEY ARE ALSO GROWING OLD
enough said, appreciate and love your parents!

8. IN THREE WORDS I CAN SUM UP EVERYTHING THAT I'VE LEARNT ABOUT LIFE, IT GOES ON
there will undoubtedly be some really tough times ahead and you'll have to say goodbye to people who you thought you'd never have to say goodbye too. you'll learn that life goes on and you need to make the most of it and the people you surround yourself with. don't worry you'll make your grandad proud, it may not feel like it after failing your GCSEs and having nowhere to go next in your education but you'll get there and do amazing.

9. TAKE UP EVERY OPPORTUNITY, EVEN IF YOUR SCARED
you'll absolutely love your first volunteering opportunity, keep going because it opens so many great doors for you and you'll meet some really great people!

10. THAT 3 1/2 YEAR RELATIONSHIP WILL TEACH YOU MORE ABOUT YOURSELF AND RELATIONSHIPS THAN EVER BEFORE
and you won't get angry hearing his name anymore. you'll figure out that person wasn't the guy you were meant to have your future with and you'll figure that out down the line when you meet somebody else. stop crying over him, allowing him to treat you like shit and leave.

so yeah, i'm now 24 full of wisdom (and crap!) i'm proper excited for the next 12 months and plan to do so much ahead of me turning 25 so its the best year of my life ever.

thanks for reading,
