5 Reflections on 2017.

How are we already in the last days of 2017? The older I get, the quicker the years seem to pass me by. 2017 has been a year which has exhausted, challenged and also rewarded me in good amounts too. The latter part (from around September onwards) of 2017 has been very difficult with anxiety, baring that in mind I have continued to grasp the more positive things within the year.

This time of year we're often so focused on the next year, the next goal, the next challenge or the next big life event, wishing our lives away. In fact, it's just as important to sit back and reflect and appreciate that life can be pretty awesome.

I've reflected a lot on the year gone by in the past, including Hello 2017, Blog and Life Goals back in January 2017.

2017 hasn't been that much of a bad year, in fact in some aspects it's been an amazing year. I want to share a few specific things that happened this year as well as sharing some stuff from the blog that have made 2017 a good year.

Left my job as a Teaching Assistant

2017 was the year of change, I packed up my responsibilities in a secondary school and left for a career in Social Media. I absolutely loved my role as a Teaching Assistant and seeing the student I worked with on a one-to-one basis smash his GCSE exams and settle into College life was an absolute highlight. Unfortunately, I didn't feel as though the role was going to develop any further and so I wanted to try something new. Whilst this triggered a lot of the problems I now experience with my Mental Health, it was the challenge that I needed. I am still unsure whether the career move was the right decision 3 months on, but I think in hindsight you've got to give these things a go. I now work as a Marketing Assistant for a wedding company and so far so good to be honest professionally.

Travelled more

As I'm edging towards the age of 30 and starting to think about the other responsibilities life will eventually throw at me (yes I am thinking marriage, buying a home and having babies) I really want to travel more and 2017 definitely provided that opportunity. I managed to get on a plane in April and managed to experience my first holiday abroad with Jordan. We headed to the Cumbre del Sol with Clickstay* for 4 nights and it was the detox dream I needed. I visited London a couple of times as well as local places like Nottingham, Birmingham and Derby too. I did manage to tick off a place from my UK Travel Bucket List when I visited Brighton for the Brigtons Big Screen with ibis Hotels*.  I really hope that 2018 continues to hold more travel opportunities for me.

Carpe Diem Emmie Smashed 2017

One of my goals for 2017 was to really cement the blog and its content. In 2017 I blogged more about the stuff I wanted to write about, particularly the Theatre reviews, restaurants as well as a slight dose of travel too. I even challenged myself to apply for Press Accreditation for events, particularly Latitude where I experienced my first music festival at the beginning of summer. I stopped going to events for the sake of a 'freebie' and decided to post about the content that appealed to me. I think that has reflected in my engagement, motivation and appeal to blog more regularly for sure.

Carpe Diem Emmie has been at many Theatre press nights, seeing some of the best productions available throughout the UK. I love the opportunity to develop my interest and hope 2018 will give me even more of a platform to stand upon.

Grandma Turned 90

If you didn't know the centre of everything I do is my family and in June my family celebrated my Grandma turning 90. I had a slight scare earlier in 2017 when she felt poorly but she managed to get better, witness her grandson get married in Oxford and then celebrate turning 90. We had an afternoon tea party for her, the sun was shining and it was so lovely to see all of my family come together to celebrate her birthday.

Continue Developing My Photography

This was one of my 2017 goals and I definitely feel as though I smashed it. I continue to experiment with shoots through my IPhone and camera to develop a style for both my blog and Instagram. I have absolutely thrived at doing this a lot this year. It's so much fun spending a few hours or so taking lots of snaps with my camera then playing with edits and ideas to share on my platforms.
